What is an Online Reputation?

An online reputation is basically your status on the Internet or how your company, website, blog, service, or product looks to the online community… These days; people browse the Internet more often than jogging in the park or strolling through the malls. In other words, your online reputation is very much like your reputation in real life.
Employers on the Internet can readily track down negative comments about you at times when you apply for a certain job. Through online tools and techniques, people can look for damaging things about you. This may sound scary, but it is nevertheless true. This is why defending your online reputation is an important part of your online life.
How does my reputation affect me?

Your name and status outside the Internet is also your reputation online and vice versa. There are millions of people on the Internet who you interact with, consciously and subconsciously. There are people who will like you, but it is inevitable that some people will be dissatisfied with your product or service, or will be unhappy with your behavior. This is evident in social media and networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where people can easily express what they feel and think about you.
How to Defend Your Reputation

Protect your online reputation by following these tips:
• Proper Internet etiquette, i.e., the so called “netiquette”, should always be observed. This is one way to ensure that your behavior will not be insulting or appear offensive to others.
• Accept criticism – you need to be humble and accept criticisms from others. This will let you know where you should adjust.
• Ask people online – ask your friends, clients, co-employees and followers for their opinion of your performance and behavior and for their feelings about you.
• Practice online reputation management (ORM) – this will help you protect your online reputation from negative feeds like bad comments, feedback, scandals etc. Doing this, you can control the information available to your peers and other Internet users you can use tools from the Internet to assist you in this process. Most tools are designed to give you’re a feed of search engine results pages and tell you what people feel and say about you and your service or product.
If you make a living using the Internet, and own a business or job, your reputation becomes the central part of your career and the most fragile part of your status. Once your reputation is damaged, so is your career or business on the Internet. This is why defending your online reputation is extremely important and needs proper attention.
