Society is progressing at a very fast pace and technological advancements provide many new opportunities for students. Social media has played a major role in transforming the face of modern education. A large number of professors and teachers speak highly of the role played by social media. It has succeeded in motivating the students by involving them in mature and relevant discussions. This change has come about by active discussions, debates, and interactions of students across borders.
Social media includes various online networking activities through videos, pictures and messages. This gives an opportunity for students to come together and share their ideas, interests and various types of information. Here the users are able to share the online libraries and connect with each other’s lists on the online community.
Presently, many educational institutions have readily accepted social media in daily routines. Undoubtedly, Facebook and twitter can provide the students with valuable information in the fastest manner. These websites can also be suitably used to have active classroom discussions. A chat room can be created, which can be implanted on a blog later, and can be scheduled for opening at a fixed time. The students are able to put questions to develop the discussion of an earlier downloaded article. Similarly, teachers can pull new information from various online sources. The blogs can successfully be used to create content on these discussions.
Social media enables the students to perform real work, and not simulate it. Students can connect with each other globally and have educational discourse using social networks. Social media also enables teachers and students to connect in real time. Therefore, the exchange of educational ideas among various cultures can take place with the help of this medium.
The biggest advantage of social media is the bringing together of students of varying age groups to assist them in assignments of various types, from homework to various research. It needs to be clearly understood that geo-tagging has a very important role to play in education. It can be utilised to find required information concerning the places being studied. Social media enables students to be in close communication with instructors to maintain their study process properly.
This exchange encourages global understanding amongst the youth of today, who are the leaders of tomorrow. The immediate aim is to provide interconnected education to the students, to open unimaginable possibilities and encourage skills and creativity. The more long term role is to provide a quality platform for professional networking, collaborating, debating and sharing information. The betterment of quality and the management of resources have been witnessed with the help of social media. More resources can now be accessible to many more people in no time at all.
In the case of individuals, it involves managing and choosing twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to broaden horizons and get connected with peers. For institutions, social media will have a positive impact on the marketing of schools, the professional development of educators and improving the techniques of learning and teaching. Gradually, learning will become very interactive and social media sites might actually be the classrooms of the future.
