Social media marketing strategies focus on creating content that is appealing and encourages the readers to participate in the social networks. Indeed, a message transmitted between users has a tendency of creating a greater impact because it is perceived to originate from a trusted and reliable source compared to messages spread by the company or its brand; it is a form of marketing driven by earned media contrary to paid media.
Nevertheless, the best social media strategies go beyond creating online presence to engaging consumers. A marketing strategy will work once the business gains an understanding of how social marketing works and participates actively in online marketing.
Developing a marketing strategy:

• Understand the needs of your customer:  Effective social media strategies are based on the needs of customers. Consequently, the social media becomes an important marketing tool once the business discovers were their existing and potential customers congregate. Furthermore, take the time to learn your customers in order to develop the most effective way of attracting their attention and engaging them.
• Find your competitors: An effective marketing strategy emanated from observing others and developing unique marketing strategies. Nevertheless, businesses should avoid using social media simply because their competitors do so. Instead, you need to understand your need and the impact its likely to generate from using one or several social media like Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter and more.
• Develop an action plan: The best social media strategies are measurable. Once you have determined what you expect to achieve from social media you need to find out how you can achieve the marketing strategy. Therefore, an action plan comes handy and plays an important role of prescribing realistic targets, including time and cost estimates. Furthermore, action plan should cater for the short term, mid term and long term. The short term action plan could, for instance, seek to close 10 deals with Twitter followers- within a span of one month or possibly make 1,000 Facebook friends- within a span of 3 months.
• Evaluate your capacity: Once you have the action plan in place, practical measures need to be put in place to get the marketing strategy executed right. The business may need to evaluate its capacity to bring the strategy into fruition. Sometimes it might be necessary for the business to execute the marketing themselves. Some cases may require the hiring of social media experts.
• Evaluate the marketing strategy: Social media is dynamic and therefore, changes with time. Therefore, effective social media strategies are flexible; they need to be continuously refined in order to adapt to the changes. The marketing strategy needs to be evaluated on a continuous basis in order to realize the mid and long-term goals. This effort provides useful information that can be used for improving the marketing strategy by enhancing the existing action plans or adopting new paradigms. The Return on Investment (ROI) is often employed to evaluate the impact of the marketing strategy.
In light of the fact that, organizations cannot control the things being said about them or product, social media marketing strategies offer business the perfect game plan to be actively involved in these conversations- the best way possible.
